Chinatown was planned in 1822 by the man who founded modern
Singapore, Sir Stamford Raffles. It quickly became home to the hordes of
Chinese who poured into Singapore to escape famine and poverty. This
crucible nurtured some of early Singapore’s wealthiest entrepreneurs,
biggest brands and remains an architect’s delight with its eclectic mix of
styles (including, yes, Indian temples and Muslim mosques). Thanks to the
area’s conservation status, you will be stepping into history on our trail into
the nooks and crannies of this 200-year-old district. In fact, you will be
following in the footsteps of Queen Elizabeth II who took a walking tour of
our Chinatown in 1972.So if it’s good enough for her, what could be better
for you?
All tours start at the Chinatown Visitor Centre, beside the unmissable
Buddha Tooth Relic Temple & Museum.
